How would you feel when you are able to watch your favourite films on your smart phones or laptop totally free of cost while travelling on the metro trains?  Sensational isn’t it!!

This would soon become a reality. Chennai Metropolitan Rail Limited or CMRL is having plans to launch an onboard entertainment system. By this the people who are travelling in metro trains would be able to log on to an app and select a movie from wide range of content available in 5 languages. The amazing point is it is totally free for the commuters. Tenders have been floated by CMRL to select a company that could provide the video content and update it regularly for the commuters so that the commuters would be entertained. It is said that this would be similar to that available on the flight but the difference is it would have more features.

An official belonging to CMRL spoke about how this would make the CMRL as the first metro train service in India to have this superb facility that would entertain the commuters. It is important to note that the servers with entertainment content would be installed in all the metro stations, trains and depot in this new system. Downloading and installation of app must be done by the commuters on their mobile phones or on their laptops. The commuters when entering the station or metro train could connect to the server through WiFi and their favourite content could be watched.

It is clear that this WiFi connectivity would work on the app only and could not be used to browse the internet. To keep the commuters entertained during their journey of 45 minutes from Chennai Central metro to the airport, this new facility would be helpful. This was also confirmed by an official.

It has been more than a year after the first line from Nehru Park to Thirumangalam was opened and CMRL still hasn’t provided mobile network connectivity. This new initiative to entertain the commuters comes at this point of time and has attracted the attention of many now. The servers would sync and the contents would be updated when the metro train are brought to the depots for the maintenance work.

One important piece of information is every time the metro train stops at the stations, there would be automatic syncing with the servers and the contents get uploaded for the sake of the commuters. This would be possible even if the trains do not come to the depots. Watching the movies or shows offline would also be possible by the commuters by downloading the contents. The commuters would be able to download a HD quality movie in just 15 to 20 seconds as the speed and connectivity between the servers and mobile phones would be superb.

An official of CMRL finally explained if the contractor could provide contents from all major TV channels then the commuters would have more options. Live streaming of TV channel contents would be possible and it would be awesome.
