The news that CMRL or Chennai Metropolitan Rail Limited has installed a 410 KWp solar power plant on the rooftop of Koyambedu metro rail depot on Wednesday, 24th October 2018, has been the subject for discussion for many now. The objective behind this installation was to access and utilize the solar energy. It must not be forgotten that just recently CMRL has installed solar power plants in 4 metro stations namely Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar Tower, Anna Nagar East and Shenoy Nagar.
A press release from CMRL revealed about the commitment of CMRL in achieving energy security, reducing carbon emission and promoting green energy concept by generating renewable energy by means of rooftop solar power systems. The release also threw light on how the solar panels at the Koyambedu metro rail depot would generate around 55350 units per month and would save around amount of Rs 14,49948 lakhs per year. The installed capacity of rooftop solar power systems by CMRL is 2.1 mega watts and this included the four metro stations also. One important piece of information is by the end of this 2018 another 5.5 MW rooftop solar power system installation would be making its presence felt.
According to a report given by Greenpeace India and Gujarat Energy Research Management Institute (GERMI), Chennai has got the potential to harness solar energy and that is enough to reduce the demand for electricity by minimum of 20 %. It must be noted that the report titled ’Rooftop Revolution: Unleashing Chennai’s Rooftop Potential’ found that total rooftop potential of Chennai city was 1380 Mega Watts.
There are many landmarks present in Chennai city and these landmarks have sizeable solar power potential. The landmarks are MRTS or Mass Rapid Transit System railway station roofs (3582 kW), metro station roofs (1696 kW), bus depot roofs (938 kW) and Chennai international airport (889 kW)
