In most of the famous temples dedicated to Lord Muruga, the most prominent event of the Kandha Sashti festival; Soorasamharam, is performed on the 6th day of the festival is performed in a grand manner.

In this tradition, however, it is rather unique to note that Soorasamharam is not bein performed in on of the 6 prominent temples dedicated to Lord Muruga!

Yes! ‘Thirutthanigai, popularly known as Tihruthani, is the place where Soorasamharam is not performed in the hugely popular temple of Lord Muruga in Thiruthani.

The folklore and the classics and tradition explain that this holy abode of Lord Muruga is occupied when he became calmer and cooler after his anger when the devotees pray Him, their problems, evils, and complaints will also melt away! The term ‘Thanigai’ in Tamil means ‘calming down or cooling down’. That is why this place is suitably named as Thirutthanigai as Lord Muruga is in this abode after venting away His anger and became calmer!

Thirutthanigai is one of the hugely popular temples of Lord Muruga, especially among the 6 temples dedicated to Him and thousands of devotees visit the temple daily having a Darshan of the main deity of Lord Muruga and praying.

In this situation, in the current year 2018, the famous Kandha Sashti festival commenced in this temple on 8th November with the divine flag-hoisting ceremony. During the festival, Laksharchana, special poojas, and Deeparadhanas are performed daily in the temple ‘Kavadi Mandapam’.

The most important event or date of the festival is today (Tuesday, 13th November) and Pushpanjali is scheduled to be performed at 5.00 PM in the evening. Tomorrow (14th November) at 11.00 AM, ‘Thitukkalayana Utsavam; is scheduled to be performed.

As this temple is an abode of Lord Muruga as He got rid of his anger and became calmer, the event of Soorasamharam is not being performed here. Thus, Kandha Sashti is celebrated in this Thirutthanigai Lord Muruga temple without the event of Soorasamharam!

However, on the concluding day of the Kandha Sashti festival, the event of the Holy Wedding of Lord Muruga with His Consort Valli is performed in a grand manner!
