Metro rail service in the section DMS-Wahermanpet from January 2019

It is expected that the public service for the Metro Rail in the section between DMS and Washermanpet will start from January 2019. The officials have informed that the trial/test runs for this purpose will be conducted during the next month.

The Metro Rail Project progressed in 2 corridors – Chennai Washermanpet – Airport and Chennai Central – St. Thomas Mount. In this, the project work has been completed in the 2nd corridor Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount and is in operation. In the 1st corridor project, the tunnelling work between Teynampet (DMS) and Washermanpet for 10 km distance have been completed. The officials have decided to open this section for public service from January.

The Chennai Metro Rail officials explained in this regard: ‘the metro rail project covering a distance of 44 km at a cost of Rs. 20000 Crores. Out of this, work on a distance of 34 km has been completed and the public service of Metro Rail is in operation. The balance part of the 10 km work and the tunnelling and constriction work including the Railway Station between Teynampet and Washermanpet has been completed now. Presently, the installation of the signal system is in rapid progress. Once this is completed, it has been decided to conduct the test/trial run using diesel engine is scheduled in December.`

Further, there are prospects of the Railway Safety Commissioner to visit and inspect the completed work. Once this review is completed, the public service in this Chennai Metro Rail section is expected to commence during the 1st half of January.

In this new section, the trains starting from AG-DMS Railway Station will reach Washermnpet via Thousand Lights, LIC, Government Garden, Central, High Court, and Manadi. The construction of these Railway Stations has been completed.

Once the public service commences in this section, the passengers can enjoy the facility of direct transport from Washermanpet to the Airport.

The central Metro Railway Station, with the 2-levels of lower and upper categories, will be a stunning set –up for the passengers. In the 1st layer of the Central Metro Railway Station, the trains will arrive from Chennai Egmore Station. In the 2nd level, the trains from AG-DMS will arrive.

Further, there are prospects of commencement of the public service for the Metro Rail in the section between Wshermanpet ad Wimconagar in June. The project`s activities are set to progress at an estimated project cost of Rs. 3770 Crores. Thus, the Metro Rail Service will be available for the public for travel from Wimconagar to the Airport.
