Safety is very important in our lives is well known. In the Chennai city with huge population people face lots of issues regarding safety. It is now revealed that the state government has given approval for commissioning of Intelligent Transport System. People would soon be surprised to find this in as many as 435 road junctions in the CMA or Chennai Metropolitan Area.

An official expressed his views and spoke about how the government order has been issued for accepting loan assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency or JICA. Soon a consultant would be studying all the road junctions and he would be appointed by the corporation of Chennai. An amount of Rs 660 crores would be spent for this above project. The superb piece of news is this new system would be responsible for the safety of pedestrians plus cyclists and other non-motorised transport. Non-motorised transport policy has been adopted by Chennai is known. By the new system there would be better coordination between line agencies like Chennai Corporation, Metropolitan Transport Corporation and the traffic police personnel.

In the first phase as many as 159 traffic junctions would get the facilities and civic body would be commissioning it in these junctions. This was as per an official. One important point is JICA would give a loan assistance of Rs 465 crores and state government would be providing its share amount of Rs 195 crores. Swift response for the movement of ambulances, fire engines and other vehicles for civic services are very important and improved coordination in the line agencies would be playing its part effectively. Based on the real time monitoring of the traffic volume, the new system would facilitate decongestion of key junctions. The fact is the traffic police personnel would be able to improve the policing of traffic junctions collecting evidence. It is important to mention that the project has got 2 sub systems like intelligent traffic management and intelligent transport management.

Adaptive systems like configuration of traffic signals at each junction would be used to control traffic by the traffic management. Development of signal control plans for individual operations would be carried out. The buses would be managed by the transport management system and this would be by developing an electronic ticketing system plus by monitoring vehicle movement, a passenger information system and a fleet management system.

The command and control centre of the Corporation would control the adaptive traffic controller of the project. During the emergencies, the traffic personnel would be permitted to operate the system at the junctions and switching to manual mode would be carried out. The performance of public transport would be monitored by the GPS based vehicle tracking system and it would be linked to digital display boards present at the bus shelters belonging to the corporation of Chennai. Smartphones would provide the information for the passengers. It is now brought out that the bus stops would show the location, speed and expected arrival time of buses at all the bus shelters belonging to Chennai Corporation.
