Health benefits of brown rice

Though known as brown rice in the English terminology, it is called red rice in Tamil and has other names as well - unpolished rice, full-rice, and also Sarakku arisi in Tamil.

While the outer cover of the brown rice is rather thick, the next immediate layer inside is the red-coloured chaff. Only when this is removed and thus all essential nutrients are lost, is the white rice that we use regularly – without the above benefits.
  • Brown rice is rich in Manganese, selenium, zinc, and other mineral salts. Brown rice also contains complex carbohydrates keeps the sugar level in the blood under check.
  • Out of the various grains in this rice category, only brown rice contains vitamin E. It is also rich in fibre. It contains carbohydrates in an easily digestible form. Thus, it helps reduce the fat content in the blood.
  • Brown rice has another important health benefit – it has anti-oxidant property and thus serves as an excellent cure for all heart-related diseases. Brown rice also contains some essential chemicals for good body health such as Anthocyanin, polyphenol, etc.
