102nd birth anniversary of former chief minister of TN MGR, coins released

On Thursday, 17th January 2019 was our former chief minister, Dr. MGRs 102nd birth anniversary. The current chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswamy grabbed many eyeballs when he released two commemorative coins of Rs 100 and Rs 5 denominations. The function also saw the presence of deputy chief minister of TN, Mr. O. Paneerselvam and he also took part in the release of two coins to mark the birth centenary of late Dr. MGR. At a function that took place in Dr. MGR Medical university complex to celebrate the 102nd birth anniversary of Dr. MGR, the commemorative coins were released and it was spoken highly by many.

The point to be noted is the coins had the image of MGR and also an inscription Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Birth Centenary. To mark the occasion, a 66 feet wide and 52 feet high Dr. MGR. Centenary Arch built on the arterial Kamarajar Road was also unveiled. It is worthy to mention here that this amazing function also saw the presence of cabinet colleagues and other senior party leaders garlanding the statues of MGR and late former chief minister of TN, Dr. J. Jayalalitha at the AIADMK headquarters in Chennai. There were also hundreds of AIADMK party cadres present and they received sweets that were distributed to them.

It must not be forgotten that the state government had organised Dr. MGR centenary celebrations for a year in all the districts. This started at Madurai on 30th of June 2017 and the final took place on 30th of September in 2018. It was in the year 1972 that Dr. MGR broke away from the DMK party after he had some issues with the then party chief late kalaignar Karunanidhi. Dr. MGR then founded AIADMK and he rose to the post of chief minister. He remained as the chief minister of TN for another 10 long years is known.
