The use of plastics has been banned in the state of TN is known. In this scenario an amazing piece of news that has emerged out now is plastics could be used to relay ODR or other district roads in TN.

Under the CRIDP or Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme, shredded plastics would be utilized by the Highways Department and these plastics would be use to relay of 600 km of ODR belonging to the state of TN. It is revealed that this work of relaying roads using shredded plastics would start in the month of February.

According to a source, ODR are single lane roads having a width of 3.5 m and these roads handle traffic up to 5500 passenger car units or PCU every day. The source revealed about how plastics are sourced from self help groups via district collectorates and panchayats. The important information gathered was for relaying a kilometre of ODR, 7-10 tonnes of bitumen were needed and this bitumen has 6 to 8% plastic in it. Point to be noted is this would be the third year relaying of ODRs has been done using plastics. It must be mentioned that normally plastic wastes were got free of cost but on rare cases the department paid for the plastic wastes.

In the year 2013 Indian Road Congress laid down standards for laying roads using plastic waste. The specifications that the pieces should not be larger than 2.36mm, dust and impurities not more than 1% were stated by the Indian Roads Congress is known.  Both advantages as well as disadvantages are present by the addition of plastic wastes. Higher resistance to water induced damage plus more durability and improved fatigue life are the plus points. The news collected was PVC and black coloured plastic should not be used combined plus the mix temperature must be below 180 degree Celsius to avoid the release of harmful gases.
