An earthquake occurs near the Bay of Bengal

A mild earthquake occurred in the Bay of Bengal near Chennai yesterday (Tuesday, 12th February) morning. The impact of the earthquake was felt in some parts of the Chennai Metro City as well.

S. Balachandran, the Assistant General Director of the Chennai Meteorological Centre, shared on this topic:

‘An earthquake occurred in the Bay of Bengal, at a distance of 600 km northeast from the Chennai Metro City At exactly 7:02:27 hours yesterday (12th February). In the earthquake measuring equipment records, it is established that the earthquake occurred at 10 km depth under the ocean.

On the Richter scale for measuring an earthquake, this earthquake has recorded 5.2 Richters.

The impact of the earthquake was felt in some parts of the Chennai Metro City and the North Andaman Sea areas. However, there was no harm to anyone. Further, there was no danger of the eruption of tsunami waves following the earthquake. So, there was no ‘tsunami’ warning.’

The Indian Climate Research Centre and the USA Geographic Research Centre have confirmed the occurrence of this earthquake.

Earlier, there was an earthquake scaling 5.2 Richters at 8.52 AM on 10th February in Myanmar as well as the Indian border state of Arunachal Pradesh.
