Chennai city to have quarry water for the people

Posted on: 14/Feb/2019 9:42:56 AM
Chennai city is facing drinking water crisis due to lack of monsoons is known. The superb piece of information is arrangements to increase drinking water supply to the water starved Chennai city are completed. It must be taken into account that the Metro water is ready to draw water from the quarries at Sikkarayapuram near Mangadu located in the western suburbs and a trial was held a couple of days back. It was pointed out by a senior official that the checks were conducted and the leaks were plugged.

The important point is water that is pumped from the quarries would go through the 4.5 km pipeline for treatment plant and then the water would be sent to the Chembarambakkam reservoir for supply to various residential places in the western regions of the Chennai city. The official explained about how a 425 BHP motor having capacity to pump out 1.25 million litres of water per hour has been sunk in the quarries and it would be running around the clock. By this 30 million litres per day or MLD of water would be pumped.

The information collected is the 25 quarries in Sikkarayapuram near Mangadu have got capacity to hold a total of 345 million cubic feet and that is just 3% of the 11257mcft that the 4 reservoirs supplying Chennai city could hold. Important point is this would be substantial when Chennai city’s precarious situation is taken into account.

The truth is the present storage level in the quarries is not yet measured due to the unexpected failure of northeast monsoon. This had forced the authorities concerned to start pumping water supply from the quarries. The North-east monsoon accounts for 60 percent of the rainfall in the city of Chennai are well known.

It is worthy to note that metro water on alternate days is presently supplying a mere 500 MLD to a portion of the residents of Chennai. This is against a normal of 830 MLD and against a requirement of 1000 MLD. The important information is metro water would be able to supply water to extra 5 lakhs residents now with the boost from Sikkarayapuram.
