In the Chennai city there are many construction workers who are finding it difficult to get quality food at cheap cost. The news that has come out now is registered construction workers could soon get free food at Amma Unavagams as the new scheme would soon be launched through the amendment of TN Manual Workers ( Construction Workers) Welfare Scheme 1994. Based on the proposal from the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation, the municipal administration and water supply department would pass a government order on the new scheme.

The information gathered is by this new scheme the construction workers would be able to get  food free of cost and their monthly bills to be maintained by the unavagams or canteens would be settled by TNCWWB or Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board. It is revealed that the board would pay the original cost of production and not the subsidised Amma canteen rates.

As per an official it is clear that both the corporation and the workers would get benefitted by this new scheme. He spoke about how TNCWWB would reimburse the production cost to the corporation.

It must not be forgotten that Mr. D. Karthikeyan, corporation commissioner, grabbed many eyeballs when he wrote to the labour and employment department in December 2018. In his letter he suggested that construction workers be allowed to eat at Amma Unavagams for free after registering their IDs plus making necessary entries.

As per the proposal, during the first week of every month, a list with beneficiary name, registered ID number, and the food items consumed the previous month would be sent to TNCWWB to pay the bills.

It was pointed out by the officials that the civic body and the labour department were working out on the modalities to implement the scheme. There would be cards and swiping machines and the workers could swipe their cards at the Amma Unavagams to record their bill. By this manual entries would be avoided. The proposal was made to tap into the un-utilized funds of TNCWWB so that the construction workers as well as the civic body would be benefited. This was according to sources in the civic body.
