1 Lakh passengers travel daily in Chennai Metro Rail

Subsequent to the completion of the entire 45 km track od he Chennai Metro Rail 1st Phase, the number of average daily passengers has gone up to 1 Lakh.

The Metro Rail Administration senior Officials informed that this would soon increase to an average of 1 Lakhs passengers daily.

The services for the public for the Chennai Metro Rail section between AG DMS and Washermanpet was inaugurated on 10th February.

With this, the 2 corridors planed as the 1st Phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project of the 1st corridor (Washermanpet-Chennai Airport) and the 2nd corridor (Central Station-St. Thomas Mount) covering a total rack of 45 km is completed.

Subsequently, the full 1st Phase services came into public service from 10th February. As a measure to create awareness on this to the public, free Metro Rail was allowed for 4 days from 10th to 13th February on both corridors.

During this free travel days, 734379 passengers availed free Metro Rail travel for 4 days from 10th to 13th February. After his, the normal system of passengers to procure tickets and travel was back in service. On the 1st day after the 3 days of free travel, on 14th February, 86312 passengers have traveled in Metro Rail. There has been a steady and gradual increase in the number of Metro Rail passengers since 14th February.

Earlier, with 35 km of Metro tracks on service, the number of average daily passengers was between 50000 to 60000.

As the travel now has been extended up to Washermanpet, the daily average number of passenger has shot up to 85000 to 1 Lakh.

The Metro Administration officials shared regarding this:

As the 1st Phase of the Metro Rail Operations is in full service, there has been a trend of daily gradual increase in the number of daily passengers. Especially, the section between Airport-Washermanpet has been beneficial for the office-goers and the passengers in this route. Presently, around 1 Lakh passengers avail of this service daily.

It is expected this trend will increase gradually and soon, there will be 2 lakhs passengers traveling in the Chennai Metro Rail.

As a measure to encourage Metro Rail Travel, a 1-day tourist card was introduced during September 2015. As per the passengers can pay the fare of Rs. 100 for the travel and an additional Rs. 50 for the card and use it for an unlimited number of traveling.

Once this 1-day card is procured, it should be utilized before 30 days. Once the travel has been undertaken, the advance paid of Rs. 50 for the card will be repaid after surrendering the same.

Apart from this, while undertaking Chennai Metro Rail travel as a group, a concession of 10% can be availed on the total fare. When undertaking monthly travel plan, procuring a trip-card and utilizing the same, a 20% concession can be availed.

The facility to procure the tourist card and the trip card has been arranged in all the Metro Rail Stations.
