Metro stations soon to give scooters for rent

Finally, the entire Metro Phase-1 service covering 45 km distance is all set and functional. In its last phase of efforts to ensure complete connectivity between stations and neighborhoods, the CMRL has started getting into tie-ups with share autos and cab services and car rental services and also the IT companies so as to provide feeder services. These are aimed at connecting metro stations. Finally, the CMRL is also to join hands with Vogo which is a Bengaluru based rental services for scooters that is likely to get launched on Monday. Vogo is functional in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. They have IoT enabled scooters which can be rented and used and returned. The price for renting a scooter will be Rs 1.20 per minute.

Pick up you Scooters at Vogo points

For this, commuters need to have the Vogo app on their mobile and link it with their driving license. Details of starting place and destination should be entered on the app after logging in. Following this, an OTP will be sent which should be entered into the app and they are then free to choose a scooter of their choice and hire it at a pickup point. The service can also be used via QR code scanning, says the official Vogo website. After use, the scooter should be surrendered at another point and the rent be paid there.

Coming on to the CMRL system, these scooters may be hired and surrendered at the metro stations as they are to work as pickup and drop points for these scooters.

Bicycles, and then 2-wheelers

Following the introduction of rental services for bicycle, CMRL eyes on also adding up 2-wheeler renting services for the commuters. CMRL believes this to be of great help in connecting people to and fro their work place and personal needs without any bothering of the traffic in the city.

What does the public say?

Scooters are excellent to combat with the city traffic. Of course, share autos help in short commutes, but one can choose it only when he has to get dropped anywhere on the way the autos ply by. Considering cars is never an option!

The missing link

Right after the introduction of metro services connecting Koyambedu and Alandur, there were a lot of complaints about the insufficient connectivity especially in the last and first mile. Upon these concerns, the CMRL started introducing a lot of transportation modes to facilitate such voids in connectivity. Rental bicycles were introduced and then rented electric scooters and bikes and share autos and share taxi services and cab aggregator tie-ups, AC vans and self-driving cars waved in too.

Nevertheless, the public still feels these services insufficient to provide seamless connectivity for first and last mile transportation. Share services are not always present at all the stations. They were in fact provided in trial basis, to start with. These will soon get launched across all the metro stations, say metro officials.

It was back in August 2018 that these share autos and share taxi services were introduced in 13 metro stations. Since the launch, over 1.7 lakh commuters started using the feeder services. These services are soon to get extended to the other metros, say officials while also pointing g that tenders for the same are floated including that for Washermanpet-AG-DMS route.
