Revamping of Usman Road likely soon

North Usman Road and South Usman Road are likely to get revamped. Both these shopping hubs of the city are set to get friendly to the pedestrians under the Smart City Project along Theagaraya Road, Venkatnarayana Road and GN Chetty Road.

Along the T.Nagar, a pedestrian plaza at a cost of Rs 33.8 crore is getting worked out. And the civic body has proposed a revamping in the design and redevelopment of almost 21 T.Nagar roads.

Once the Rs 23.41 crore developmental works are done in both North Usman Road and South Usman Road, there will be pedestrian crossings and organized road junctions with street functions and the footpaths will be made wider, according to the CSCL (Chennai Smart City Limited) board meeting that happened last week.

The existing footpaths are not of proper shape, say CSCL officials. The existing footpaths are set to get stretched and the junction be improved. Furthermore, all kinds of obstructions that hinder pedestrian flow will get weeded out, officials say.

Civic body officials say that more parking facilities will be included and hence there will be no room for illegal parking in the footpaths.

Officials add that a parking management system will soon be introduced in these 2 roads. In specific areas of Panagal Park, such parking of vehicles will be permitted. There will be individual parking lots provided for two-wheelers and four-wheelers.

Furthermore, the kerbs in targeted stretches and that of Usman Road flyover and Ranganathan Street are set to get removed. The shoppers are mostly occupying these places. A levelled walking area will be laid in order to promote better pedestrian movement without any barriers, say officials.

The encroachments are also to get removed, say residents of T.Nagar. There is hardly any space for the pedestrian movement along South Usman Road. Starting from the T.Nagar bus terminus, the service road until Duraisamy Road is fully inundated with shoaps. These should be removed if a pedestrian-friendly space is to be achieved, say T.Nagar residents.

A civic activist says the actual Usman Road width is really never seen due to the presence of too many shops. The road can be developed only after removing these encroachments.
