Summer vacations to end, schools fear about the water crisis now

Posted on: 29/May/2019 9:43:40 AM
It was announced recently that the state board schools in Chennai would reopen on 3rd June 2019 after the summer vacations. The important point is nearly one million students in and around Chennai would be returning to the schools soon and this in the middle of severe water shortage in Chennai city.

The schools are now worried about the water crisis situation going from bad to worse when the schools starts functioning in full capacity. Many schools would be managing with existing bore wells and supply from metro water.  It is now said that few private schools would source water from farm wells in the suburbs using private tankers. They are worried of the fact that metro water might not supply water to them.

The important information collected is a school with 2000 students needs around 20,000 litres of water for sanitary purposes and 2000 litres o drinking water every day. In T. Nagar is present Vidyodaya Girls Higher Secondary School is known. The headmistress of this school, V. Shanthi expressed her thoughts. She spoke about the presence of 2 bore wells in her school and was unsure about these bore wells providing enough water for the girls once school gets opened.  Finally she highlighted that postponing the reopening of schools by a week would not provide the solution.

Once all the students come into the school the demand for water would be known. This was as per the correspondent Prescillai Premavathy of CSI Bain School in Kilpauk. She later spoke about how presently her school is able to manage the water crisis but once school gets reopened then the supply of water might not be enough for all the students. It must be noted that there are more than 3500 students studying in CSI Bain School.

Headmaster of Nungambakkam based Chennai Boys Higher Secondary School Mr. E. Iraivan, expressed his views about the water scarcity. He spoke about how many corporation as well as government schools are dependent on metro water. He threw light on how his school needs water to be supplied every alternate day.

The point to be noted is CBSE schools have confirmed that they would be opening only following an order from the school education department. Principal of Asan Memorial Senior Secondary School, Sunitha Vipinchandran spoke about how to meet the water demand her school would be buying metro water on alternate days.

She then explained about how the heat now is more worrying than the water crisis and hoped that the government would postpone the re-opening of the schools by a week. It is superb to mention here that in Tambaram few schools have joined hands with farmers to draw water from farm wells.
