Good news for the Chennai residents!!
The news that has come out is CMRL is planning to give a 50% fare discount on Sundays. The main purpose is to make more people use metro trains.
It was brought out by some sources that the combination of plans has been worked out. Information is the 50% fare discount might not be just on Sundays only. It might be on Sundays as well as on the public holidays also. There is still no clarity whether this discount would be for a few months or for a year. The proposal would be sent to the board of Chennai metro rail after carefully deliberating on what might be the best option.
Information is the ridership has been increasing during the weekdays whereas on Sundays and on public holidays the ridership has been on the decline. An official belonging to the CMRL expressed his thoughts about the ridership. He spoke about how during the weekdays about 1.15 to 1.20 lakh people travel by metro trains and how on Sundays just 60000 to 70000 people travel by metro trains in Chennai. He was hopeful that after implementation of this discount plan there would be more ridership in the metro trains.
It must be taken into account that the proposal is beneficial to the commuters would be considered. It has been pointed out by some sources of CMRL that feeder services have been started at many metro stations in Chennai. The point is there is a feeder service from Government estate and AG to Marina Beach. It is said that 50% discount would draw more crowds to the metro trains due to the fact that a large number of people visit Marina Beach on public holidays and on Sundays.
The metro train ridership grew by 67% in 2018 when CMRL offered a 40% discount for 1 week to test if more people use the metro trains when fares are reduced.
