Imagine you are having a wristwatch and you flash it at the automatic ticketing gates in the metro stations and just enter into the trains without any hassle. Seems like a scene from a Kollywood film isn’t it!! No, it is not.

It is revealed that standing in a long queue for a ticket plus a cumbersome recharging process for travel or trip cards might not be there for the commuters of Chennai metro trains.

It must be noted that CMRL and famous watch manufacturers Titan have joined hands to manufacture watches that would allow the commuters to just flash their smartwatches at the automatic ticketing gates and walk into the trains. The details of this amazing project are getting finalized and this was pointed out by the officials of CMRL. Discussions were held in this regard between the officials of CMRL and Titan recently.

Information is a chip that would be inserted underneath the dial so that the automatic ticketing gates in the metro stations could detect the chip once the commuter shows it. It was later mentioned by an official that several prototypes have been shown as examples for both the genders. There are few issues like options for recharging the chips and they need to be sorted out. Point is the exact details of the technology that was not revealed. The prices of these smartwatches would be in the range of Rs 1000 to Rs 1500.

It is now said that the set of watches with a host of designs and models would be produced with the chip already inserted in it. In about 6 to 8 months it might be available. One important piece of information is the chip cannot be inserted in an existing watch or a new watch that a customer buys.

It must be taken into account that the working of the chip should not be hampered by ornamentation on the watch. There exists an issue with the automatic entry system and it needs to be sorted out before the smartwatch plan gets rolled. It is important to note that the commuters could use SBI debit cum smartcards to swipe and pay for the ticket at the stations.
