The news that CMRL is having plans to construct the first Light Rail project for the Chennai city has become the topic for discussion for many now.

It must be taken into account that this Light rail project would connect Velachery withTambaram.

On Thursday, a meeting took place and it was decided that CMRL would construct the stretch. Information collected is a feasibility study of this project that would begin shortly and this study would be given to private firms just like phase-1 or phase-1 extension projects. It is worthy to note that this stretch is likely to cover a distance of 15 km.

Important information is this Light Rail is likely to be built at-grade or on the ground. It is known that the metro phase-1 project of 45 km or phase-1 extension project of 9 km has both elevated as well as underground stretches.

The feasibility study would start in few weeks of time and would go for 6 to 6 months. It is said that this study would look at various options for the stretch. An official of CMRL spoke about how after studying various route options there would be discussions regarding the best possible route. Finally, DPR would be prepared. It is revealed that CMRL has plans to explore options including one touching Pallikaranai, Medavakkam, Gowrivakkam, and East Tambaram.

Light rail through these above said densely populated places of south Chennai might become a reality in the future. It is important to note that the plan is to link with Velachery MRTS so that the commuters who want to switch systems and go to areas connected by this network might be benefited. The important advantage of choosing Light rail over Metro rail is its low cost. In addition to this, the light rails could take sharp turns and travel through dense and narrow stretches and this would not possible for metro trains.
