The Tamil calendar month of ‘Margazhi’ is considered a sacred month. A deep religious aspect pervades throughout the state. All the temples starting with early poojas and prayers. ‘Rangoli’ or ‘Kolam’ pattern done by the girls/women adorning the front of the houses/residences and the whole street or road full with exquisite ‘Kolam’ patterns drawn using mainly rice flour along with other colour materials with endless designs and colours too. This visual attraction, cheering the mind and setting in a better mood, and the thought of God all pervades through most citizens!

Apart from the religious fever, the weather in Tamil Nadu also changes a cooler climate is experienced for a period of 3 months till end February throughout the state!

Add the Music/dance festivals organised various ‘Sabhas’ throughout the state, especially, the Chennai Metro City, and you have a lovely setting for the season to spend and enjoy.

With 2 major literary poetic series belonging to the Vaishnavite and Saivite culture, known as ‘Thiruppavai’ and ‘Thieuvembavai’ (compilation of 30 songs each, the 30 days of the sacred Margazhi is celebrated by chanting 1 poem each day and praying and performing pooja throughout the month!

Moreover, these devotional songs are played early morning in the various 3emples dedicated to Lords Siva and Vishnu throughout the state and a large number of devotees visit the temple to have the Darshan of the Lord and the Goddess and pray!

So, in reality, a unique environment is set the pleasantly cool, chilly weather, the devotional songs being played in the air, exquisite Kolam patterns on the streets, unending stream of devotees looking fresh and devout visiting the temples make for an excellent environment indeed!

By the way, one more significant observation on the Kolam or rangoli pattern, after drawing the kolam, the pattern is bedecked with pumpkin flowers at the centre and the right corners making way for a glorious sight! The scientific point is that with the streets/roads being cleaned and adorned with kolams, mosquitoes, germs, and bacteria lounging in these areas get removed paving the way for a purer atmosphere and thereby preventing infectious diseases. Needless to mention, Rangoli or Kolam competitions are held all over the state with attractive prizes!

Today is the 1st day of the sacred month of Margazhi, there was a stream of devotees singing and chanting holy ‘Bhajans’ and having Darshan of Lord Muruga at the Chennai Metro City Vadapalani Temple.

There were streams of devotees in other famous temples such as Porur Patteeswarar temple, Tirupur Avinasi temple, and the temples in Coimbatore and Madurai as well!
