Chennai residents might not have known about Urbaser but in the coming days, they would certainly get to know more about this Spain based firm.

It is worthy to note that Urbaser is a leader in the environmental services and it has been providing municipal, waste treatment and recovery to UK residents.

Beginning from Tuesday, 24th December, the garbage collection and disposal in 7 zones belonging to GCC (including all 5 zones in southern Chennai) would be done by Spanish firm Urbaser.

The important piece of information is the civic body at 8:30 am today would hand over the work orders to this firm and this would be done in the presence of municipal administration minister Mr. S.P. Velumani and other officials.

The conservancy works in the zones of Teynampet (9), Kodambakkam (10), Valasaravakkam (11), Alandur (12), Adyar (13), Perungudi (14) and Shoinganallur (15) would be given to the Spanish firm. This was as per a senior official.

In the past, as per the earlier model, the contractor was paid according to the tonnage of waste collected is known. It is now said that payment would be given by the corporation depending on 34 key performance indicators of KPI. These indicators include100% source segregation, 100% door-to-door collection and use of only battery-operated vehicles to collect garbage. Important point is if the firm defaults on the KPIs then the payment would be reduced. Online monitoring would be carried out for the garbage collection and its disposal.

In keeping with the international standards, the contract is for 8 years and the firm has to invest heavily in bringing the state-of-art machinery. The segregated wet waste would be sent to micro composting centers or MCC belonging to the corporation. It is known that at these MCCs manure is prepared.

For the purpose of outsourcing conservancy operations in north Chennai, GCC is conducting final-round talks with Ramky Enviro engineers. The point is the tender evaluations are underway and before Pongal, these would be finalized. Another important piece of information is GCC would also launch an app-based parking system in Chennai city.
