Don’t be surprised to see real estate and transport getting integrated into the future in Chennai.
It is brought out that CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited is having plans to integrate real estate and transport for the sake of generating non-ticketing revenue.
Wimco Nagar is a calm locality in Tiruvottriyur and CMRL is having plans to build a 20 storey structure above the elevated depot cum station at this Wimco Nagar. In addition to the tower, there would also be 4-level parking space below the stabling lines and by December 2020 the depot is likely to get ready,
An official of CMRL spoke about how it could either be a residential or office space depending on the demand after the extension line gets opened. He hinted that it would be like a satellite city.
He explained how at present there is no design for the structure and how foundation for the structure is being laid now for future development. It must be taken into account that at present Koyambedu depot could handle all the 52 trains and the second depot would be needed only when the trains get older and frequent maintenance is required.
For the sake of generating additional revenue, CMRL has plans to build a high rise above the elevated depot. Important information collected is similar structures are planned in the elevated depots to come up at Madhavaram and Poonamallee as a part of 118.9 km three corridor phase-2.
It is known that Wimco Nagar depot is a part of the phase-1 extension line from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar with 9 stations and is likely to open in the middle of 2020. The superb advantage is the commuters could travel all the way till airport in one go without any break as it is an extension of phase-1 corridor Washermenpet to the airport through Anna Salai. There are many who don’t want to settle down in this place because they consider the place to be far away. In future, metro trains would provide comfortable and faster access. At a height of 12 m, the elevated depot with 16 lines spread over 15,500 sq km area is taking shape.
