Presently, metro trains in Chennai have got tiny route map display panels and announcements are carried out manually. In the future, LED screens would replace these.
For the sake of providing information to the passengers, CMRL would be procuring digital screens. These digital screens would provide information about the routes accompanied by an audio for informing the passengers about the approaching station. Advertisements would play their roles in getting revenue for CMRL as advertisements would also be displayed on the LED screens.
Currently, CMRL has got a total of 52 metro trains (including 10 new trains got for phase-1 extension line at north Chennai). Point to be noted here is CMRL has floated tenders for design, supply, installation and commissioning of the digital display screens for its entire fleet of 52 trains. By the middle of 2020, 9 km north Chennai metro line would be opened and it is clear that the LED screens would be linked to the signalling system and it would be put up in all trains for operations. These screens would be present in each of the 4 cars in the metro train.
There would be automatic visual plus audio broadcasting about route related information in CMRL phase-1, phase-1 extension lines and inter corridor operations between corridor one and corridor two. It is worth mentioning that CMRL decided to opt for display systems as the present fleet of 42 trains are designed just for 45km phase-1 route and stations. The truth is it does not include the stations in the phase-1 extension line.
