The field survey work of the lands for the Metro Rail Expansion project from Airport to Vandalur is being expedited.
In order to reduce the crowd/vehicle congestion in the Chennai Metro City and its suburban areas, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had announced in 2018 that the survey activities would be undertaken for the Metro Rail service to be extended from the Chennai Airport to Vandalur Kilambakkam.
Accordingly, The Chennai Metro Rail Company had undertaken the commencement of the 1st Phase of activities for this Metro Rail extension project. The Project Report was prepared after a detailed and thorough analysis regarding the route (the roads to be crossed) the distance, and the existing traffic density/congestion. As the outcome of this survey has been satisfactory, the next phase of activities has now commenced.
The Metro Rail officials shared in this regard:
“The first phase of analysis was undertaken regarding the linking of the Chennai Metro City with its suburban area by extending the Metro Rail Serice from the Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam (Vandalur).
As such, the extension project will be from Chennai Airport Metro Rail Station to Kilambakkam where the new Mofussil bus terminus is being set up.
The 1st Phase of the extension will be covering a distance of 16 km. In this section, there will be 13 stations at a distance of 1.2 km between each station.
As the outcome of this 1st Phase of survey/analysis has been highly satisfactory, the next phase of field survey measurement has been undertaken and is in progress. The activities including acquisition of land, etc., will continue!”
