The traffic congestion on the OMR or IT Expressway is very high these days and this has been creating many issues.
It is known that CMRL has been chalking out plans for its phase-2 project extending 118.9kms and starting operations first on the stretch between Poonamallee and Power House. The OMR residents want CMRL to focus on their stretch also as soon as possible for the sake of reducing traffic congestion. It is said that the residents of OMR were looking forward to the one that would link Madhavaram and SIPCOT through Adyar and this would be among the three corridors in Metro Phase 2 project.
There would be a decrease in the travel time along the OMR if there was metro rail connectivity. This was as per a software professional belonging to Sholinganallur. He explained about how he had to leave his home before 7:50am to reach his office at Guindy. He concluded that the stretch between Madhya Kailash till Siruseri was full of vehicles in the peak hours and how metro trains would cut the travel time.
According to a resident belonging to Thoraipakkam, the running of metro train services has been eagerly awaited for a long time. She brought to light about how the flyovers that were promised 10 years back are not there even now. She then mentioned how OMR has been witnessing more than 1.2lakh vehicles in a day and how there was no grid road connectivity. Getting out of the traffic was not an easy task.
It must be recalled that CMRL planned to start operations from Madhavaram and Sholinganallur through Adyar and Madhavaram to CMBT first. This plan was later tweaked to first begin services from Poonamalle to Power House. It is now said that CMRL would be giving equal preference to all the stretches though they would be starting construction first between Poonamallee and Power House.
