To make the fast mode of transport affordable to many belonging to the low income group, the residents of north Chennai now want metro train fares to be reduced.
For a trip, currently Chennai metro charges Rs 10 to Rs 60 is well known. The cost of metro train ticket from Washermenpet to the airport for a distance of 22.328km is Rs 60. Truth is that when the extension line gets inaugurated the journey between airport and Wimco Nagar would cost Rs 70 per trip.
It is learnt that the officials belonging to CMRL have not clearly mentioned the ticket fares for the extended line. They have just pointed out a 20percent discount provided for tickets purchased through QR code.
As per Mr. Jayaraman, former chairman, Tiruvottiyur municipality, the CMRL must know about the socio-economic conditions of north Chennai localities. He added that CMRL must bring down the ticket prices so that more persons would be able to use the metro trains. He was of the view that if CMRL doesn’t reduce the ticket fares then people would use suburban trains to reach their destinations. It is known that in suburban trains it would be possible to go to Tambaram for just Rs 15 per trip.
