It is known that CMRL has been taking many efforts for more people to use their smart cards.

Soon, the CMRL has planned to distribute smart cards to a few retail outlets and restaurants in Chennai. Commission would be given to those outlets that would sell the smart cards. The officials belonging to the CMRL have made it clear that this was an attempt to increase the number of people travelling on the system.

As per an official of CMRL, few restaurants and retail stores have been selected in Chennai and these would accept the smart cards. In the beginning, 2000 to 2500 cards would be given and the response would be taken into account. He later hinted that a small commission amount would be given for selling the smart cards. In the future there might be the possibility of more such outlets selling the smart cards of CMRL.

It is learnt that staff would be sent to various metro stations in Chennai and they would be persuading the commuters to buy the smart cards. On an average, 80,000 commuters travel by metro trains and CMRL wants to increase this to one lakh in the future. The sources were of the view that the increasing Coronavirus cases could affect the target of CMRL.

It is now believed that the TN government must bring a single smart card where a commuter would be able to use the cards in the buses, malls, retail outlets and in the restaurants etc in Chennai. It was later revealed by an official that the commuters could use these smart cards to pay their bills everywhere. He added that this was the idea when the smartcards were mooted initially. He concluded that the MTC bus stops must be shifted close to the stations so that the commuters would be able to walk point to point without any problem.
