The total lockdown on Sunday did not prevent the public from using the metro trains in Chennai!!

Nearly 5000 passengers used metro trains on Sunday and they mostly used the metro trains to catch flights or to take trains. The total lockdown had led to no other modes of transport to reach Central station or airport and therefore public used metro trains to reach these destinations. This was according to some officials belonging to CMRL.

It is learnt that Chennai Central metro rail station had nearly 850 passengers and Egmore metro station was used by 500 passengers. Through the Chennai airport metro station nearly 400 passengers travelled. Just 30 to 50 passengers were present in other metro stations in Chennai. Metro stations in Vadapalani, Alandur and Government Estate had more than 100 passengers.

The CMRL official hinted that apart from the passengers many essential workers also used metro trains. It is well known to us that metro trains run at a frequency of every 5 minutes on the peak hours and every 7 minutes in rest of the day. The total lockdown on Sunday made MCRL to run minimum trains and just 4 trains were operated on that day.

It must be noted that from Wimco Nagar to Chennai airport trains run every hour and from Chennai Central to Chennai Airport and from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount for every 2 hours respectively. The surprising piece of information is that even without the last mile connectivity (due to total lockdown on Sunday) many passengers used metro trains.
