To arrest sewage based issues, Chennai Metrowater department has begun a mass de-silting exercise of the sewer network now. Information collected is that the water agency has accelerated the work on arterial and bus route roads and less traffic now due to the total lockdown is helping the department to carry on with the work.

It has been brought to light by some officers of Chennai Metrowater department that sewer pipelines were being flushed and the clogged lines being cleared of the blocks.

Every day, Chennai city generates 540 million litres of sewage and it gets collected and then treated through the network. In the normal times, these types of works would be carried out in the night time as there would be less movement of vehicles on arterial roads like Cathedral Road, Poonamallee High Road and Anna Salai etc.

According to an official belonging to Chennai Metro water department, de-silting sewer works has been carried out now even in the mornings due to  strict restrictions in place because of lockdown.

He spoke about how desilting of sewer lines running for a length of 507km in the bus route roads and nearly 4808km in non-bus route roads has been taken up across Chennai.

For the operation, a total of 501 sewer machines including jet rodding, super suction machines etc have been used now. In this total lockdown period, the water agency is planning to cover sewer networks in as many as 34764 streets in Chennai. It is very clear that the desilting of sewer lines would prevent blocks plus overflow issues etc during the rainy season.

Market areas and public places would be crowded during the normal situation and now the staff belonging to the Chennai Metro water department are cleaning the sewer lines in these places. It is now mentioned that in Area- 8 the network on the busy second avenue in Anna Nagar is being de-silted now. As many as 11000 maintenance holes are present in this zone.

According to an official, maintenance works in nearly 372 km long pipeline networks on the main roads and 2347 streets of Area-8 are being carried out in coordination with other government agencies. It is true that damage to the utility cables have been avoided. In the Area-8 alone, everyday nearly 168 cubic metres of silt is being removed on an average.

The commercial establishments are not functioning and this has led to drastic reduction in the plastic and solid waste clogging the sewer lines now.
