Overhauling of metro trains is an essential maintenance procedure that must be carried out without fail!!
It must be noted that without overhauling of trains there could be intermittent snags or even derailing etc. Now, CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited has just completed this overhauling process for the first metro train. It was brought out by some officials belonging to CMRL that the maintenance work involves coaches removal and removal of most of its components to check its working conditions. Point to be noted is that the maintenance work is being done owing to the requirements of OEM or original equipment manufacturer maintenance manuals.
Information is that the first overhauling process would start 5 years after the trains are pressed into service and later it would become a continuous cycle. A CMRL official spoke about how it would take 40 days for overhauling each metro train and how overhauling of atleast 7 metro trains would be completed over the next year. An amount of Rs 1.77 crores would be spent for overhauling for each metro train. The official explained how the checking of welding joints and repainting of coach frames are done as a part of overhauling procedure. It is learnt that replacement of primary suspension rings plus re-profiling of wheels would be done to reduce the vibrations and sounds. By this, the comfort of the passengers would be more.
Not only replacement of worn out components would be done but CMRL would also do a complete overhaul of traction and auxiliary converters, brakes, air conditioning systems. Deep cleaning of ducts of air-conditioners would also be done. Truth is that after the overhauling procedure gets over the metro trains would have to go through static as well as dynamic tests and get certified by an authority. Only after this, the metro trains would be able to come back on the tracks for passenger services.
