Chennai residents have now got a reason to rejoice!!
In another 5 years of time if everything goes well as per the plans, there would be an underground metro train operating from Madhavaram in the north Chennai to Taramani in the south Chennai through Ayanavaram. By this, the residents would be able to avoid the heavy road traffic and travel freely and smoothly. This would become a reality in 5 years provided the contractors stick to the deadlines.
Few months back, the construction work was started by the CMRL for phase-2 project. This has gained importance now as the contractors have begun building diaphragm walls in many locations along the stretch for creating underground networks from Madhavaram and Taramani. Before the tunneling works begin, the walls have to be raised well as they are important components. Box type structures, diaphragm walls of 1metre thick would serve to avert any settlement of soil.
It was brought out by some officers from CMRL that building the diaphragm walls takes 6 to 8 months for completion and it would be a challenging task. The construction of diaphragm walls has started in many localities such as Madhavaram, Murari Hospital, Ayanavaram, Purasawalkam, Chetpet, Royapettah Government Hospital and Greenways Road etc.
From Germany, the trench cutters have come and they have been used to dig deep into the soil in many places in Chennai. An official pointed out that CRL is in the process of identifying tunnel boring machines. After the diaphragm wall construction gets completed fully, the tunneling work would start by the middle of 2022. He then mentioned that the tunneling work would be highly challenging. Point to be noted is that tunneling work would take a time of 2 to 3 years also. He assured that the mistakes done in the past would not be repeated once again during the underground work.
