The Tamil Nadu state government has lifted all the restrictions regarding Coronavirus infection and the public are feeling very happy!!
The normalcy has resumed again in Chennai as the number of Coronavirus cases have reduced. In February 2022, CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited saw a superb increase in the number of passengers. In the month of January 2022, 25.14lakh passengers travelled in metro trains in Chennai and the ridership went up to 31.86lakhs in the month of February. A twenty six percent increase in the ridership was witnessed and this has caught the attention of many.
In December 2021, CMRL witnessed 38 lakhs passengers and that was just before the third Coronavirus infection wave began spreading. It is noteworthy that before the pandemic began that is February 2020, the metro train daily patronage was 1.16lakhs and in December 2021 the patronage was 1.24lakhs per day. The Chennai metro train patronage got affected badly in 2020 due to Covid-19 lockdown and restrictions in the movement of people etc. The patronage began to increase whenever the restrictions were removed.
With the lifting of restrictions and returning to normalcy, there would be more patronage in the metro trains in Chennai in the coming months. This was according to some sources belonging to CMRL. Public is now returning to their normal lives as the educational institutions, malls, theatres etc have resumed their activities. This would make the number of persons (using metro trains to reach their destinations) to increase. Another reason has also been cited now for more patronage in Chennai in the future. It is revealed that the opening of Thiruvottiyur - Theradi metro station and Wimco depot metro station on Chennai phase-1 extension line would also increase the footfalls.
The sources have mentioned that when approval is obtained from the commissioner for metro rail safety these 2 metro stations would be opened for the public use.
