This piece of news would surely surprise many Chennaites!!

It has been announced that the metro station in St Thomas Mount would be closed down foe the sake of carrying out various works between Madhavaram and Sholinganallur.

It is known that Chennai Central- St Thomas Mount metro line is a connecting link for Madhavaram-Sholinganallur metro line and Chennai Beach- Velachery metro lines in Chennai. Passengers come to St Thomas Mount metro station through the nearby Mount suburban electric railway station.

In the first floor of the St Thomas Mount metro station there is an overhead electric road and the second floor has a ticket counter and passengers area etc. On the third floor Chennai Central- St Thomas Mount metro trains operate. It must be noted that on the top of this station a strong foundation has been laid for constructing apartments etc.

A new metro line is being constructed from Madhavaram through places like CMPD, AlwarThiruNagar, Porur, Ramapuram, Patrodu, Alandur, Parangimalai, Adambakkm, Medavakkam Kootu Road via Perumbakkam to Sholinganallur for a distance of 47kms.
Point to be noted is that this new metro line would begin from Butt Road over Kathipara Flyover at a height of 37m and would be built in the form of a bow till Alandur station.

At the backside of the Alandur metro station, in the parking area, a new station would be built along this new metro line and through the link building it would be joined to the current metro station.

A specific place has been allotted at the St Thomas Mount metro station and metro trains from Madhavaram and Sholinganallur would be arriving. Point is that by carrying out additional construction works, the construction works of about an amount of Rs 400 crores would be reduced. This has been planned already.

It is now said that on the metro line of Madhavaram – Sholinganallur, on the western side of St Thomas Mount new metro station would not be built. Instead of that, on the  Madhavaram- Sholinganallur metro line sufficient changes would be made between Alandur and  St Thomas Mount metro stations. In this regard, additional construction works would be carried out at the present metro station. At this station, construction of Adambakkam- Mount flyover rail route works would be completed by 9 months.

It is for these above said works St Thomas Mount metro station would be closed and work would be started and completed in one year. An announcement about this would be out soon.
