No more waiting for long hours at the signals or moving through the busy traffic on the roads for the commuters belonging to north, west as well as southern suburbs while going to the IT hub in OMR in Chennai!!
In another three years, these Chennai residents would be able to travel on metro trains to the IT hub on the Old Mahabalipuram Road or OMR Road in Chennai. It is now mentioned that construction of a 10km elevated corridor between Nehru Nagar and Sholinganallur would begin soon.
This elevated section would have 10 metro stations and it would be constructed within the period of 26months. Popular company Larsen & Toubro has been given the contract by Chennai Metro Rail Limited or CMRL.
It is learnt that the contract to construct the remaining portion on OMR from Sholinganallur to Siruseri SIPCOT of 10km distance hasn’t been given to any contractor till now. By the year 2025, the 118.8km phase-2 project would be ready.
Last week, the contract to construct an elevated corridor was issued for the Nehru Nagar-Sholinganallur line. This includes construction of elevated viaduct from ramp south of Taramani link Road till Sholinganallur.
There would be as many as10 elevated metro stations in places like Nehru Nagar, Kandanchavadi,Perungudi, Thorapipakkam, Mettukuppam, PTC colony, Okkiyampet, Karapakkam, Okkiyam Thoraipakkam and Sholinganallur etc.
According to an official belonging to CMRL, to complete the construction works faster corridors across phase-2 have been divided into smaller sections and contracts have been issued. The main advantage of dividing the corridors into smaller sections is that any issue on one corridor would not affect other corridors.
It is worth mentioning that the OMR line is part of 45.8km corridor-3 from Madhavarm to Siruseri SIPCOT. In the past, tenders floated for OMR line were cancelled by CMRL as the corridor was re-designed.
Point is that the elevated corridors were planned on level -2 with an elevated expressway under it. It must be noted that steps were taken to cut costs and for that CMRL re-designed the plan to construct the elevated metro line on level one through the centre of the road on Old Mahabalipuram Road.
It has been revealed that when the OMR line opens then commuters from north, west and southern suburbs in Chennai would be able to reach the IT hub without any problem. The superb piece of information is that OMR residents could take a direct train to Madhavaram switch corridors at Thirumayilai and reach the shopping hub at T. Nagar.
