The sources have mentioned that Chennai Metro Rail Limited or CMRL has put on hold regarding the light rail line project between Tambaram and Velachery in Chennai.
It is well known that the TN government in its plan to expand rail based transport systems in Chennai and suburbs completed CMRLs phase-1 project of 45km and phase-1 extension of 10km.
In several places in Chennai, phase-2 works have been going on now. It is revealed that metro trains would operate between Poonamallee and Power House by the year 2025. It is known that CMRL has been given the work of extending the metro towards south in 2 ways that is the airport- to Kilambakkam and Tambaram to Velachery. The feasibility report on Tambaram- Velachery route has been completed by CMRL and it has taken the decision to put it on hold for the time being.
Truth is that most areas of Tambaram- Velachery stretch aim to cover would be carried out in phase-2 project or the airport-Kilambakkam stretch. Whether to have a new light rail or not is being discussed now. The sources from CMRL has pointed out that temporarily this light rail project has been kept on hold and any final decision about this would be taken later.
