In January 2023, the construction of twin tunnels to link Chennai city`s core places with the IT corridor on Old Mahabalipuram Road or OMR would begin. It is now said that CMRL is assembling a tunnel boring machine and deploying it into a shaft built at the Greenways Road metro station site.
After passing under the Adyar River, the machine might build a tunnel to Adyar junction. The machine might become the second TBM to start tunneling work in the phase-2 project and this would be when the machine starts operations in the next year.
It is learnt that the 118.9km phase-2 would include a 42km underground section and it would be likely to be completed by 2026.
As per an officer at the Greenways Road metro station site it was clear that the construction of the shaft to deploy themachienwas completed and assembling of TBM has been started also. He hinted that by 15th January 2023 tunneling work would begin. It must be noted that the stretch between Greenways Road and Adyar might be about 1km and tunneling would be carried out here. It is noteworthy that it would be a part of 45.8km corridor-3 from Madhavaram milk colony to Siruseri Sipcot.
It is brought out that the metro stations at Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur etc would be a crucial link to places like Purasawakkam, Nungambakkm, Royapettah and Mandaveli with the IT corridor. Information is that it would be an elevated corridor on the IT corridor from Taramani to Siruseri Sipcot.
