In 2022, 6.09 crore of commuters travelled in the metro trains in Chennai and in the month of December alone 64.5 lakhs commuters used metro trains to reach their destinations in the city. Sound`s incredible right!!
From 25.16 lakhs passengers using metro trains in January 2022 to 64.5lakhs in December, the Chennai metro ridership witnessed 156percent increase. It is noteworthy that in March 2022 there was a 40% increase in the metro trains patronage and 13.4 lakh more passengers travelled in the metro trains. It must be recalled that in March month only last mile connectivity services like bike taxis were introduced.
As per an official from CMRL, to attract more passengers gift vouchers were launched for the passengers who took a maximum number of trips plus recharging for a specific amount for making more people to buy smartcards for metro train travel. After the mini buses began operating from the metro stations, many people began using the metro trains even more.
The Chennai metro stations witnessed a maximum number of passengers per day in the month of December 2022 with daily average of 18000 to 20000 passengers. About 10,000 passengers used Thirumangalam metro station and about 11000 passengers used airport metro station. The bitter truth is that despite a superb increase in the number of passengers, CMRL is yet to achieve the ridership that was projected in its DPR. It was expected that about 7lakhs passengers would use the metro trains in December but just 2lakhs took metro trains to go to their destinations in the city.
