If everything goes according to the plan, then in the future we might get connections between the metro stations and suburban stations at several places belonging to Chennai!!
To connect metro stations and suburban stations in the Chennai city, CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited has associated with CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Association.
At many locations in Chennai, the metro line runs parallel to the suburban rail network. The passengers often find it difficult to shift between these 2 modes or transport because of the fact that these 2 lines are far away.
It is noteworthy that in north Chennai metro line extension through Washermenpet, Tondiarpet, Kaladipet, New Washermenpet , Theagaraya College and Wimco Nagar has parallel suburban lines too.
It was brought out by a top officer belonging to CMRL that there was no exclusive pathway and the streets were overcrowded with poor lighting facilities. For multi-modal integration, CMRL is joining hands with CUMTA. He added that the places must be studied and then provisions would be made to link metro stations and suburban stations.
Near the Guindy suburban station , a skywalk is being constructed now and this would link GST Road, Guindy metro station, Guindy suburban station and bus stops on the Guindy Race Course Road.
The concourse level of the metro station would be connected to the suburban station platforms by means of a skywalk here. As a result, the commuters would be able to walk across the GST Road, enter the metro/suburban station or even walk to the Race Course Road to get a MTC bus. This would change the face of Guindy in the future. This was according to an official from CMRL. He shed light on how the Southern Railways or SR has been constructing the skywalk in Guindy and how CMRL has been contributing towards it.
