For Madhavaram-Sipcot corridor in Chennai, Chennai Metro Rail Limited or CMRL has now obtained CRZ clearance or coastal regulation zone clearance. It is known that the parts of construction at Thirumayilai and Taramani fall under the CRZ areas. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change or MoEF& CC in a letter dated on 28th of February has given clearance to CMRL corridor-3 project. This was based on the recommendations of TNSCZMA or TN State Coastal Zone Management Authority and CMRL`s submissions etc. Information is that the total corridor length is 45813 km and it has 50 stations. That is 30 underground and 20 elevated stations.

The total area in the CRZ zone is 1242.19sqkm. It is worthy to note here that the project components under CRZ areas are an underground tunnel of 1219.86m. It is said that an emergency evacuation shaft would be coming up by the Buckingham canal and the Adyar River at Thirumayilai, Indira Nagar and Taramani etc.

On the conditions that the structure must not disturb the water flow of the Buckingham canal and Adyar River, the authorities recommended the project to the MoEFF & CC in the 117th meeting of the TNSCZMA. The green belt around the canal must not be disturbed and there must not be ground water extraction in the CEZ areas and this was according to TNSCZMA.

Clearances were issued by MoEF & CC based on an important condition that the vibration levels must be monitored at a distance of 200m on either side of the alignment.
