Many metro train passengers are finding it difficult to reach their destination from the metro stations in Chennai as there is no proper last mile connectivity.
Soon, this issue won`t be there as CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited has planned to launch electric vehicles in 5 stations for the first and last mile connectivity. The electric feeder vehicles could be used by the passengers who walk out of the metro station.
in the metro stations present in the places like Koyambedu, Thirumangalam, Wimco Nagar depot, Thousand Lights LIC, Meenambakkam or Nanganallur Road, last mile connectivity would be provided thru electric vehicles. It must be taken into account that recently CMRL floated a tender calling for expressions of interest or EOI.
It was brought to light by the tender that 4 wheeler electric vehicles with 5, 8 and 14 seats have been planned. These vehicles would carry the passengers in and out of the stations from 6am to 10pm. Using QR codes or CMRL smart cards, the passengers would be able to pay the feeder services. It is now said that these electric vehicles would have GPS trackers, SOS for female passengers and a customer care support system.
To make the start-ups and new companies to take part in the bids, 5 crowd attracting metro stations have been chosen now. This was mentioned by some officers belonging to CMRL. Feeder services would be added to other metro stations based on the feedbacks from the passengers.
According to an officer from CMRL, EOI was floated to decide on a good business model that would provide benefits to vendors as well as for them. He hinted that based on the feedback another tender would be floated for operator and 6 months later the vehicles would be ready for operations.
The metro train patronage has now crossed 2.5lakhs per day and the plan for new feeder service comes at this point of time.
