Construction of Underground Stations Initiates for Chennai Metro Rails Phase II

In a significant development for the Chennai Metro Rail`s phase II project, the construction of underground stations has commenced at key locations such as Otteri, Pattalam, and Perambur along Corridor 3 (Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Thirumayilai).

Corridor 3, spanning 45.4 km, is the longest corridor in the 116-km phase II project and aims to enhance mobility and alleviate congestion across the city. This corridor will connect various areas from Madhavaram to SIPCOT, passing through densely populated zones like Madhavaram, Purasawalkam, Perambur, Royapettah, Thirumayilai, Mandaiveli, Adyar, Taramani, Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, and Siruseri.

The initiation of construction in Corridor 3 is of particular significance, as a segment of this stretch (Madhavaram-Taramani) faced delays in the project`s initial stages due to tender cancellations and re-floatation, resulting in a delay of over a year. However, tunnel work on this stretch has now gained momentum, and station construction has also begun.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials emphasized the complexity and time-intensive nature of constructing underground stations compared to elevated ones. The process involves building the diaphragm wall, followed by the construction of various station components like the base slab, roof slab, and concourse slab. In densely populated areas, close monitoring of vibration levels ensures the safety of neighboring buildings during tunnel and station construction.

One noteworthy aspect is the unique design of the Pattalam station, situated within Corridor 3. It is a stacked station, featuring the concourse on the first level, the upper track line on the second level, and the downward track line on the third level.

As construction progresses, the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project remains a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming the city`s transportation landscape and fostering enhanced connectivity.
