In response to high demand, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is increasing parking capacity at two crucial stations - Little Mount and Thirumangalam. The expanded parking at Little Mount station is set to open within a few days, while Thirumangalam`s enhanced facility will be operational a month later.
With limited last-mile and first-mile connectivity options, such as mini-buses or shared cabs, thousands of commuters rely on personal vehicles to reach the nearest metro station. At present, the existing parking lot at Little Mount accommodates approximately 250 two-wheelers and 50 four-wheelers. After the expansion, it will accommodate 400 two-wheelers and 50 four-wheelers.
At Thirumangalam Metro Rail station, where 50 cars and 480 two-wheelers are currently parked daily, plans include adding another level (at the second level) to accommodate an additional 350 two-wheelers. Additionally, a piece of land acquired for the Thirumangalam station, part of the phase II project, will provide parking space for about 70 four-wheelers and 100 two-wheelers.
Both expansions aim to address the parking demand driven by the substantial daily footfall. Little Mount serves 5,000 to 6,000 people daily, while Thirumangalam witnesses around 13,000 to 14,000 daily commuters. The increased parking spaces aim to alleviate congestion and cater to the growing needs of metro commuters.
