Officials of the Chennai Metro Rail have informed that the project progress, which was previously halted in the Sholinganallur-Siruseri section of Phase-II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, will resume shortly.
The Second Phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project covers a distance of 116.1 km across 3 corridors. Among these corridors, the Madhavaram-Siruseri section is one, comprising the third corridor spanning 45.4 km. Tunneling work has commenced at Madhavaram Dairy Milk Centre, Greenways Road, and Chetpat, and is currently in progress within this section.
Currently, the project involves laying tracks and constructing railway stations in these corridors.
Meanwhile, overhead track work from Nehru Nagar to Siruseri SIPCOT on the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) began last year. Of this, overhead track laying work spanning 10 km between Sholinganallur and Siruseri has been completed for the initial phase, and road barriers are being set up for the next phase of the project.
The contract for establishing 9 railway stations in the Sholinganallur-Siruseri SIPCOT section was awarded to Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNS) last April.
RVNS appointed a subcontractor for the construction work; however, this subcontractor failed to commence work, causing a delay in the project`s progress.
Presently, it has been announced that the project work will recommence shortly.
In this regard, officials of the Chennai Metro Rail project stated:
"Although the contractor had initiated work last year, the subcontractor appointed by RVNS could not commence work. Consequently, RVNS (Rail Vikas Nigam Limited) terminated the subcontractor`s contract. Furthermore, RVNS has identified a second subcontractor to resume the project. Therefore, construction work will recommence soon, and the track laying in this section will be completed as scheduled."
