In a recent development, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has entered into a contract agreement for the reassessment of travel demand in the proposed Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) from Tambaram to Velachery, with the possibility of extending to either Guindy or Little Mount. The contract, signed on Tuesday, involves consultancy services provided by M/s SYSTRA MVA Consulting (India) Private Limited, who will also be responsible for updating the existing Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR).

According to a CMRL press release, the scope of work encompasses the preparation of a travel demand forecasting study for the MRTS implementation between Tambaram and Velachery, potentially extending to Guindy or Little Mount over a 26 km corridor. The press note highlights that the previous DFR, submitted to the Tamil Nadu government, only considered the corridor up to Velachery MRTS station and neglected the connection to existing Metro stations in key commercial and residential areas of Velachery. The reassessment of the travel demand forecasting study is deemed necessary to address these overlooked aspects, as stated in the press release.
