Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) is set to enhance transit-oriented development in its phase II project by incorporating commercial spaces around major stations. Identified areas near key interchange stations like Koyambedu, Alandur, Sholinganallur, and Madhavaram Milk Colony will see the construction of malls, office spaces, and plazas, connected to the stations via dedicated skywalks.
The expansive phase II network spans 116 km across three corridors, aiming to boost revenue and ridership. CMRL officials plan to hire consultants to provide recommendations for effectively utilizing the identified land parcels, ensuring seamless connectivity and promoting efficient transit-oriented development. Notably, Koyambedu is slated for the most significant development, covering 31 acres around the metro station. Consultants will be tasked with preparing detailed feasibility reports and master plans for each location, taking into account commuter perspectives, traffic flow, and global best practices. The move aligns with CMRL`s vision to create integrated spaces around metro stations, fostering convenience for commuters and stimulating urban development.
