Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has received approval from the Ministry of Defence for a temporary road diversion proposal to facilitate the expansion of Chennai`s metro rail network. The proposal, which involves diverting traffic through Defence land, aims to accommodate construction activities for Phase 2 of Corridor-5 from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur.

The temporary traffic diversion will be implemented along Mount-Poonamallee Road, starting from Porur and passing through various routes including Defence Colony 1st Avenue and Cantonment Roads. This measure becomes necessary due to narrow road widths at certain locations such as Madras War Cemetery and Butt Road.

Following approval from relevant departments including TANSIDCO and Cantonment, CMRL has initiated bush clearing works and anticipates completion of road development within two months. The temporary traffic diversion is scheduled to commence in the first week of May 2024 and will remain in effect until construction works at Paul Wells Road and Butt Road are completed.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in Chennai`s metro rail expansion project, aimed at enhancing public transportation infrastructure across the city.
