Summer trouble in Medavakkam in Chennai grabs the attention now!!
One of the most important localities in southern Chennai is Medavakkam. There are many IT companies and gated communities etc here. In addition, Medavakkam has got the longest flyover in Chennai. The bitter fact is that there is hardly any piped water supply here. The people residing here depend on groundwater and private water tankers etc.
According to a Medavakkam resident groundwater levels have been depleting fast. He added that in the past groundwater was present at about 6m below the ground but now it is 20m below the ground. Those residing in the apartments in Medavakkam have been finding it very difficult now.
It was later brought out by another resident here that despite the presence of 535m borewell in the apartment just half the apartment tank gets filled up.
As per a panchayat official, Medavakkam panchayat provides 50lakh litres of local borewell water through 24 overhead tanks to about 60000 residents. He spoke about how the residents get panchayat water for 2 to 3days a week. It must be noted that the residents of Medavakkam were supposed to get 4MLD desalinated water from the new 150MLD Nemmeli desalination plant. It is known that this desalination plant was inaugurated by the chief minister of TN in February 2024.
