Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has made significant progress in the expansion of the city`s metro rail network under Phase II, following the successful completion of Phase I and its extension. This ambitious project involves the construction of three additional metro rail corridors, spanning a total of 116.1 km. To accomplish this, 23 Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) will be employed.
In Corridor 3, the initial 9 kilometers of the underground section, stretching from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Kellys, is being executed by M/s Tata Projects Limited. For this segment, seven TBMs have been deployed for the tunneling works.
On October 23, 2023, TBM Anaimalai (S98) began its tunnel drive from Ayanavaram Station to Otteri Station (Down line) in Corridor 3. The TBM successfully covered a tunnel length of 925 meters, culminating in a breakthrough at the Otteri shaft. This significant milestone was celebrated in the presence of Thiru. M.A. Siddique, I.A.S., MD, CMRL, along with senior officials from the Government of Tamil Nadu, CMRL, GC, and Tata Projects.
