Officials from the Chennai Metro Rail Corporation have announced plans to begin construction of the metro tunnel from Purasaiwakkam to Kelleys in July.
The Phase II Metro Rail Project in Chennai spans 116.1 km across three lines. One of these lines, the 45.4 km route from Madhavaram to Siruseri to Sipcot, includes several tunneling works, including those at Madhavaram Dairy Farm and the Green Corridor. As part of this effort, the tunnel work from Purasaiwakkam to Kelleys is set to commence next month.
According to Chennai Metro Rail officials, tunnel and elevated work are ongoing at various locations along the three lines of the second phase. Of the 23 planned mining machines, 18 are currently in use, with work progressing at over 40 sites. Groundwork for the Purasaiwakkam to Kelleys tunnel has been completed, and the underground mining machine will drill approximately 300 meters. This section is expected to be completed on schedule.
The initial 9 km stretch from Madhavaram Dairy Farm to Kelleys utilizes seven mining machines, with recent completion of a 925-meter tunnel from Ayanavaram to Otteri.
