Dr C Vijayabaskar at the Government General Hospital on Tuesday inaugurated a minimal access surgery unit. The unit has been set up at an estimated 30 lakh.

GH dean Dr V Kanagasabai said, “We have installed two laparoscopic machines costing 20 lakh and have 20 inpatient beds. Doctors can perform 10-15 surgeries a week.”

Traditionally, surgeries required larger incisions which result in excessive blood loss and increased morbidity but with medical advancements, doctors could perform surgeries with smaller incisions. Dr Vijayabhaskar said Tamil Nadu was the first state to start such a unit in a government medical college.
