Sudden cracks in Mount Road with Metro tunneling work

Posted on: 21/Feb/2014 4:24:53 PM
12 km of tunneling work has been completed in Metro rail project. Tunnelling work was started in Mount Road from 12th February. Tunnel boring machines have been used for the distance from Government Gardens to LIC Building. While this was in progress yesterday, Cement-mixture started getting out of the road surface. Some cracks also appeared on the road. Police were deployed immediately to divert the traffic.

The area where cement spewed up has been cordoned off and repair work is in progress.

When starting tunneling work in a new place, cement-like mixture is sprayed at high pressure. The surrounding areas of soft soil will get hardened. Only after this, the tunneling work will start and function safely. However, when spraying of this mixture at high pressure was carried out in Mount Road, with the surrounding soil being very soft, the road startyed cracking and this mixture was spewed out. This has been rectified. The surrounding buildings have been declared safe.
